By the edge of a tiny pond lived a little frog named Freddy.

Freddy wasn’t big or strong. His back was a bright, shiny green, and his belly was as white as a freshly washed seashell. Every evening, his favorite thing to do was sit on a round lily pad and watch the moon slowly climb into the sky.

The other friends in the pond would say, “Freddy, you’re just a little frog. How can you be a hero?”

Freddy blinked his big eyes and said seriously, “A hero doesn’t have to be super strong. If you’re willing to help others, you’re a hero.”

Everyone laughed. Only Little Snail said softly, “I believe in you, Freddy.”

That night, a gentle breeze blew through the reeds. Suddenly, they heard a tiny crying sound coming from the edge of the pond.

Freddy perked up his ears and hopped over at once.

It was a little duck named Millie. Her favorite yellow fluffy ball had fallen into the waterweeds, and she couldn’t reach it.

“Don’t worry, I’ll help you,” said Freddy.

He jumped into the water and gently pushed aside the soft weeds. The weeds tickled his nose, and he almost let out a huge sneeze! But he held it in because he knew Millie was worried.

Finally, Freddy used his little front paws to push the yellow ball out.

Millie clapped her wings happily, “Thank you, Frog Hero!”

Freddy’s face turned a little pink. For the first time, the word “hero” felt very warm.

A little while later, a little hedgehog named Pippin came running over. His red apple had rolled into a crack between some rocks, and he couldn’t get it out.

Freddy looked at it and said, “We can figure this out together.”

He asked Little Snail to crawl near the apple and cheer for it in his tiny voice. He asked Millie to gently push the rock with her flat beak. Freddy hopped onto the rock and used his little feet to nudge the apple out bit by bit.

One, two, three—

The apple rolled out!

Pippin spun around with joy, “Freddy, you are truly the bravest hero by our pond!”

Freddy lowered his head shyly, “I’m not the only brave one. We did it because we were together.”

The moon rose higher and higher, and the pond looked like a silver mirror. The frog, the duck, the hedgehog, and the snail sat by the lily pads, listening to the cricket play his tiny violin.

Freddy looked at his friends, and his heart felt warm and cozy.

He finally understood that a true hero isn’t someone who jumps the highest or the farthest. A true hero is someone who reaches out a helping hand when others need it and invites everyone to work together.

That night, Freddy slept very soundly. In his dream, he became a little frog wearing a green-leaf cape, hopping gently under the moonlight and helping every little animal who needed a friend.

And the breeze by the pond whispered softly:

“Good night, Freddy the Frog Hero.”
