She reached for the phone without opening her eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Olivia \u2014 Incoming Call.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">She stared at the name for a long moment. Olivia hadn&#8217;t called her in nearly a year. Or tried to.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Another pause, longer this time. &#8220;Honey, Olivia&#8217;s been out of town. She&#8217;s in Portland for work. She texted me two days ago.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Mara&#8217;s stomach tightened. &#8220;She texted you?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">&#8220;Yes. Said she&#8217;d be back next week.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Mara hung up and opened her phone. She scrolled to the call log. There it was \u2014 or rather, there it wasn&#8217;t. The entry from last night was gone. No missed call. No text thread. Nothing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">She checked her notifications history. Empty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">That wasn&#8217;t possible. She hadn&#8217;t deleted anything. She remembered seeing the name light up the screen. She remembered the vibration against her palm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">She sat in her car outside Olivia&#8217;s building for a long time, the engine off, watching the second-floor window. The blinds were drawn. The light turned green. She didn&#8217;t move until the car behind her honked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">That evening, she sat at her kitchen table with a glass of wine she hadn&#8217;t tasted and stared at her phone. She thought about the voicemail she&#8217;d never listened to. She thought about the three dots that appeared and vanished. She thought about driving to Portland.
