He wore a tiny pair of round spectacles perched on his beak, carried a little red notebook everywhere he went, and took his workvery seriously.

His work? And too quiet. And I don’t know where anything is.”

Dr. Cluck thought for a moment. Then he opened his red notebook and flipped through the pages.

“Ah,” he said. “I have just the thing.”

He gathered a small pile of soft hay and arranged it right next to Clover. Then he placed a warm lantern nearby — not too bright, just a gentle golden glow. He asked Bessie to breathe slowly nearby, so Clover could hear the steady rhythm of her breathing. And finally, Dr. Cluck sat down beside Clover and told her a story.

It was a story about a brave little chick who traveled across a meadow to find the perfect sleeping spot. Every night, if needed.”

Clover smiled, closed her eyes, and fell fast asleep.

From that night on, Dr. Cluck made his rounds a little later, too — after the moon had risen and the stars were twinkling above the barn.

He checked on Bessie. He hummed for Pip. He told stories to Clover. And sometimes, when the barn was very still and very quiet, the other animals would hear a soft little sound from the corner of the hayloft.

It was Dr. Cluck, settling into his own nest, opening his red notebook one last time, and writing:
All patients resting.
