He instinctively pulled the collar of his windbreaker tighter and looked up at the sky; the clouds hung low, like a faded gray cloth. His phone vibrated in his pocket—a message from his mother: “It’s getting colder. Remember to dress warmly.” He stared at the screen for two seconds, didn’t reply, shoved the phone back into his pocket, and stepped out into the wind.

He’d been walking down this street for three years. The convenience store, the dry cleaner’s, and the bakery with its warm yellow light always shining—they were like a row of silent old friends. Today, the bakery’s window was fogged up. He pushed the door open, and the wind chime tinkled softly. Behind the counter stood the familiar round-faced woman, just sliding the last tray of croissants into the oven.

“The usual?” she asked without looking up.

“Mm-hmm.” Elias sat down on a bar stool by the window. Outside, the streetlights had just come on, their glow casting long shadows across the damp pavement.

When the croissant was brought out, he noticed a small cup of hot milk beside it. The woman wiped the cup and said casually, “It’s windy today—here, have this to warm your hands.”

He cupped the glass in his hands; the heat stung his palms slightly. The milk was unsweetened, carrying the subtle sweetness of the grains themselves—just like the warm rice porridge his grandmother used to keep warm on the stove when he was a child. He suddenly recalled the line from his mother’s text: “Remember to dress warmly”—she’d probably been doing the same thing, on some chilly evening, hesitating for a long time over her phone screen before finally typing those words.

The oven beeped. The woman turned to retrieve the bread; the straps of her apron had loosened and were swaying behind her waist. Elias watched her back and suddenly felt that the wind wasn’t so cold after all.

He finished his milk and set the cup back on the counter. The woman was packing the croissants into a paper bag, her fingertips dusted with flour, as if covered in a light dusting of snow.

“It’s going to get even colder tomorrow,” she said.

“Mm-hmm.” He took the paper bag and pushed open the door, stepping out into the wind.

The wind was still blowing, but now he had a warm paper bag in his pocket. He looked down and took a bite of the croissant; the flaky crust crumbled at the corners of his lips, like a silent snowfall.

His phone vibrated again—it was his mother once more: “Come home early.”

This time he replied, “I’m on my way.”

The wind swept around the street corner, swirling up a few fallen leaves before gently setting them down again. The streetlight stretched his shadow long, then shortened it, then stretched it long again, like a quiet river.

[4
18
post-446","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-heal","tag-story
["GET
