The evening rush hour had just passed, and half the benches at the stop were empty. He chose the seat furthest from the edge, placed his briefcase on his lap, and cradled it as if protecting a fragile object.

The neon sign of the convenience store across the street lit up, its warm yellow glow casting long shadows across the damp pavement. He looked down at his phone; the screen displayed an unread work email with the jarring subject line “Urgent.” His thumb hovered over the reply button but hesitated to press it.

A bus approached from the distance, its headlights tracing two weary streaks of light through the twilight. Ian stood up, then slowly sat back down. Not this one. The bus he was waiting for wouldn’t arrive for another twenty minutes.

The sound of pages turning came from the bench next to him. He turned his head and saw a woman in a beige trench coat, her head bowed as she read an old book. The pages were yellowed, their corners curled, as if they’d been caressed time and again. She read slowly, pausing occasionally to trace her fingertip gently over a line of text, as if to confirm something.

Ian’s gaze fell on the canvas bag beside her. The opening was slightly ajar, revealing a section of a dark blue scarf—exactly the same as the one in his own bag.

He suddenly remembered that when he’d left that morning, his wife had slipped the scarf into his bag, saying it would get colder tonight. He’d been rushing to reply to an email at the time and had merely mumbled “Mm-hmm” without even looking up.

A bus pulled into the station and then drove away. The bus stop fell silent once more.

The woman closed her book and looked up toward the intersection. Her profile appeared soft in the light from the convenience store, with fine lines at the corners of her eyes, like paper gently creased by the passage of time. She seemed to sense Ian’s gaze, turned her head, and gave a faint smile.

The smile was delicate, like the first leaf drifting down in the twilight.

Ian smiled too. He took out his phone, opened his wife’s chat window, and typed: “Got the scarf. What do you want to eat tonight?”

Send.

The woman stood up, put her book into her canvas bag, nodded gently at him, and turned to walk across the street. Her silhouette blended into the deepening night, like a drop of ink falling into water—slowly spreading out, then slowly settling.

In the distance, car headlights flickered on again.

Ian stood up, took the scarf out of his bag, and draped it over his arm. The evening breeze brushed past him, carrying the faint chill of early winter, yet no longer biting.

He suddenly felt that waiting for a car and waiting for a person might not be so different after all.

Both were a warmth in the twilight that refused to fade.

[1
18
post-449","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-others","tag-story
["GET
