To her left lay a mountain of reports; to her right, a computer screen that was always lit; and sandwiched in the middle was she herself—an exhausted soul repeatedly battered by KPIs and deadlines. She rarely looked up, except to check the time or to make sure she was still breathing.

That is, until a wooden picture frame shaped like a sailboat appeared on her desk.

It was a “welcome to your new workstation” gift from her colleague Sophie. The frame had a Mediterranean style, with white and blue accents, and the bottom of the boat was curved so it could gently rock like a cradle. Inside the frame was a photo of Erin with her family: sunshine, sandy beaches, and her long-missed, unguarded smile. In the photo, she wore a loose linen dress; her hair was slightly tousled by the sea breeze, but her eyes shone like stars.

“It’s special, isn’t it?” Sophie had said with a smile at the time. “I picked this out on purpose because I think you’ve been too ‘steady’ lately—you need a little ‘sway.’”

At the time, Erin had merely smiled politely, not giving it much thought. She placed the photo frame next to her computer, and occasionally, between keystrokes, she would unconsciously flick the boat’s hull with her finger. The little boat would then gently rock from side to side, emitting a faint sound of wood rubbing against wood. The sound was soft, yet it was like a pebble dropped into a deep pool, sending ripples spreading out in circles across her stagnant heart.

That afternoon, the department meeting was unusually dull. The manager’s voice sounded like a lullaby, and the PowerPoint slides were crammed with data so dense it made one’s head spin. A familiar sense of suffocation washed over Erin, and she instinctively reached out to touch the picture frame. This time, she didn’t just flick it—she gave it a firm push.

The little boat swayed violently, more vigorously than ever before. It rocked back and forth, as if it were truly riding the wind and waves on the open sea. Erin’s gaze was irresistibly drawn to it as she watched her reflection in the photo rise and fall with the “waves,” smiling. In that moment, the clamor of the conference room seemed to recede like an ebbing tide; all that remained in her ears was the rhythm of the swaying wood and a long-forgotten thought deep within her heart—a thought of “freedom.”

After the meeting ended, Erin didn’t return to her seat right away. She stood by the window, watching the endless stream of cars below. She suddenly realized she hadn’t “rocked” like this in a long time. Not physically, but emotionally. She had turned herself into a rock, letting the winds and waves batter her without budging an inch, yet in doing so, she had lost the ability to feel the tides.

She returned to her seat and gently nudged the picture frame once more. The little boat swayed gently, like a gentle metronome. Erin looked at her beaming smile in the photo, then glanced at the unfinished report on her screen. She felt no anxiety; instead, a strange sense of calm washed over her.

It was as if she had realized something. It wasn’t about quitting her job to set sail, nor was it about completely upending her current life. Rather, she could find her own rhythm between “stability” and “sway.” Just like this picture frame—its base is fixed, but the boat can sway freely. She didn’t have to be a stubborn rock, nor did she have to be a ship setting sail on a long voyage. She could be this swaying boat, staying on a set course while allowing herself moments of gentle, soulful sway and freedom.

Erin picked up her pen and began to draw a small, crooked smiley face in the blank space of the report. Then she went back to work. Only this time, her fingertips were no longer cold and stiff; instead, they carried a warmth that was almost tender—the warmth of a “human being.”

The sailboat picture frame continued to sway gently on the corner of the desk. It hadn’t changed Erin’s work, nor had it altered the course of her life. But it had changed something more subtle—and more important—it reminded Erin that, besides being an “employee,” she was also a “person” who could laugh, feel tired, and long for the sea breeze.

[3
23,18
post-550","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-feeling","tag-feeling","tag-story
["GET
