It was piled high with discarded display stands, and a thick layer of cobwebs had formed on the fire sprinkler pipes. Every night as Aiden patrolled past, sweeping his flashlight through that shadowed area, he had never noticed anything out of the ordinary.

Until that late Thursday night when he was working overtime.

He swiped his card to enter B3 as usual and caught a faint whiff of bleach. The beam of his flashlight sliced through the darkness, revealing three pairs of shoes neatly arranged on the floor. Two pairs of black men’s leather dress shoes lay side by side, their toes pointing toward the wall. The third pair was a red women’s stiletto, sitting alone ten centimeters away, its toe pointing toward the entrance.

Aiden crouched down. The men’s shoes were size 42, their soles so clean they looked unworn. The women’s shoe, size 36, showed wear on the inside of the heel; the leather had a fresh sheen. He reached out and touched it—it was ice-cold. On this floor, the only person on duty at night was Old Zhou, the electrician; he’d never seen a female employee come down here at this hour.

He swept his flashlight around the area. A thin layer of dust settled on the concrete floor, and aside from the area around the shoes, there were no footprints. The old posters on the display racks were covered in dust. The smell of disinfectant in the air was fading, replaced by an even colder, metallic odor. The green light of the emergency lamp in the corner flickered on and off, like some organ pulsing faintly.

The next day, he arrived half an hour early to take over his shift. The three pairs of shoes were gone. Not even an indentation remained on the floor—as if they had been nothing more than a mirage cast by the flashlight’s beam the night before. He reviewed the surveillance footage from the twelve hours before and after. The B3 freight elevator doors had remained tightly shut, and no one had entered or exited the fire escape.

Late into the night on the third day, he deliberately avoided B3. At 3:00 a.m. during the shift change, the voice of Xiao Jie, the new intern, came over the walkie-talkie: “Brother Aiden, were those shoes in B3 yours? They were arranged so neatly.”

As he rushed downstairs, the smell of disinfectant in the elevator was so strong it made him choke. Same spot, same arrangement. But this time, the toes of the women’s shoes had been turned around, facing the two pairs of leather shoes—as if someone had turned to face the wall.

Xiao Jie yawned: “I did my patrol at 2:50. Strange—they were gone when I passed by just now.”

Aiden said nothing. Behind the display rack, he found a long strand of brown hair tangled around a rusty support. The ends were split and had been dyed. He recalled the missing persons alert forwarded in the security department’s group chat last month—a woman missing from a certain district, described as having brown hair and a habit of wearing red stilettos.

He didn’t report it. In his sixth year on the job, he’d seen too many things vanish: lost packages, broken-into lockers, and sudden gaps in surveillance footage. Some secrets exist simply because no one is willing to step into the light.

Late on the seventh night, he went back to B3. The moment he turned on his flashlight, he saw three pairs of shoes peeking out from under the freight elevator door, their toes neatly aligned toward the interior. The smell of disinfectant had vanished, replaced by the earthy, musty scent of soil after rain. He reached out to pry open the door, but just as his fingertips touched the metal, the door suddenly vibrated slightly.

The numbers on the elevator display jumped from B3 to B2, then back to B3, and remained unchanged.

He slowly withdrew his hand. Next to the heel of the red women’s shoe on the floor, a small patch of dried mud had appeared at some point, its shape resembling the outline of a small town in the south. Aiden stared at the patch of mud and suddenly recalled a remark the old security guard had made offhand during his orientation six years ago:

“B3 used to be the archives room. It flooded once, so all the files were moved out. But some stuff sank to the bottom—they couldn’t get it all out.”

As he turned to leave, he didn’t look back at the elevator doors. But when he reached the corner, he heard an extremely faint sound behind him—like a high-heeled shoe gently tapping the metal floor.

Ever since that day, every time Aiden passed by B3, he noticed that the B3 button on the elevator panel was slightly cleaner than the others. The arc left by a fingerprint matched the exact pressure of a right index finger pressing it down.

He never asked who it was. Some doors aren’t meant to be opened—they’re meant to remind us that they were once opened.

[14
18
post-832","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-suspense","tag-story
["GET
