I want lots of food!”

Every day, Farmer Joe came to the yard with a bucket of golden corn.

“Here you go, little ones,” Farmer Joe would say, sprinkling the corn on the ground.

But Pip did not just eat his own share. Pip pecked at one kernel, then ran to another corner and pecked again. Then he ran to the middle of the yard and pecked once more.

Soon, corn was scattered everywhere.

The brown hen, Mrs. Clucky, shook her head.

“Pip, you are wasting food,” she said gently. “If you take more than you need, there may not be enough for others.”

Pip flapped his little wings.

“But I like corn!” he said. “And I am a growing chicken!”

The old rooster, Mr. Redcomb, looked down at the wasted corn.

“A seed is a small thing,” he said, “but every seed has a story. It sleeps in the soil, drinks the rain, feels the warm sun, and grows tall before it becomes food.”

Pip tilted his head.

“A story?” he asked.

“Yes,” said Mr. Redcomb. “Would you like to see where your corn comes from?”

Pip nodded quickly. “Peep! Yes, please!”

So Mr. Redcomb led Pip to the edge of the farm, where a long row of corn grew under the sunlight.

Pip saw tiny green shoots pushing up from the earth.

“This corn began as a little seed,” Mr. Redcomb explained. “The farmer planted it carefully. The rain helped it grow. The sun gave it warmth. The wind sang to it. And many hands worked hard to bring it here.”

Pip looked at the tall corn plants. They swayed gently in the breeze, like a quiet green sea.

Then he thought about all the corn he had scattered on the ground that morning.

Some had been stepped on.

Some had rolled into the grass.

Some had been left behind.

Pip’s little heart felt heavy.

“Oh no,” he whispered. “I did not know.”

Mrs. Clucky came over and gave him a kind smile.

“It is okay to learn,” she said. “The important thing is what you do next.”

Pip stood very tall, as tall as a little chicken could stand.

“I will do better!” he promised.

The next morning, when Farmer Joe came with the bucket of corn, Pip did not run everywhere.

He waited patiently.

He took only what he needed.

He ate slowly and happily.

When he saw a kernel fall near the duck pond, he picked it up carefully.

When a little piece landed near the flower bed, he found it and ate it too.

The other animals watched in surprise.

“Pip is being very careful today,” said Daisy the Duck.

“Yes,” said Benny the Bunny, twitching his nose. “He looks very proud.”

Pip did feel proud.

After breakfast, he helped Mrs. Clucky clean the yard.
