Not by much. Just a few inches. Like it had leaned forward without asking.

James stopped.

The shadow stopped too.

He lifted one hand.

The shadow lifted its hand a half second later.

“Come on,” James muttered, shaking his head. “Not tonight.”

He kept walking.

By the time he reached his apartment building, the streetlights had turned everything orange, and the shadow looked almost normal again. Almost. James told himself it was exhaustion, bad lighting, the kind of trick your eyes played when you’d spent nine hours answering emails that didn’t matter.

But the next evening, the shadow refused to follow him into the lobby.

James stood in the doorway, one foot inside, one foot out. The glass door behind him reflected the sidewalk, the old brick building across the street, the thin line of his own body. His shadow stayed outside, pooled on the concrete like spilled ink.

“Are you serious?” James said.

A woman passing with a small dog glanced at him. He stepped back onto the sidewalk, and the shadow slid under his shoes again, obedient and ordinary.

Inside, the lobby was warm and bright. James took the elevator to the fourth floor, unlocked his door, and stood in the hallway for a long time before turning on the lights.

That night, he sat at his kitchen table with a glass of water he didn’t drink. The apartment was quiet except for the refrigerator humming and the occasional car passing below. James kept looking at the wall behind him, where his shadow should have been.

It was there.

But it wasn’t facing the same way he was.

James turned around slowly.

The shadow stayed turned toward the window.

“Why?” he asked.

The question sounded ridiculous as soon as it left his mouth. Shadows didn’t have reasons. They didn’t have feelings. They were just shapes made by blocked light.

Still, James felt a strange tightness in his chest, the kind that comes when you realize something has been wrong for longer than you’ve admitted.

The next morning, he called in sick.

He spent the day watching the shadow move across the floor, waiting for it to do something obvious. It followed the sun across the kitchen tiles. It stretched across the couch when he sat down. It climbed the wall when he stood near the lamp.

Nothing strange.

By late afternoon, James almost believed the night before had been a mistake.

Then he went to the bathroom to wash his face.

When he looked up, the mirror showed him clearly: tired eyes, unshaven jaw, a shirt wrinkled from sleeping in it. But the shadow behind him was not behind him at all.

It was sitting on the edge of the bathtub.

James froze.

The shadow looked like him, but calmer. Its shoulders were lower. Its head was tilted, as if it had been waiting.

James gripped the sink. “What do you want?”

The shadow didn’t answer. Of course it didn’t. But James felt the question land somewhere deep in his body, heavy and undeniable.

He thought about the office. He thought about the way he had smiled at his boss when he wanted to quit. He thought about the dinner he had canceled with his sister because he was “too busy,” and the voicemail he had never returned. He thought about the last time he had done something simply because he wanted to.

The shadow stood.

James turned off the bathroom light.

For a moment, there was nothing. Then the hallway light caught it again, thin and gray against the tiles. It moved toward the front door.

James followed.

Outside, the evening air was cool. The streetlights had just come on. James walked without a destination, letting the shadow lead. It didn’t pull him. It didn’t drag. It only moved a little faster than usual, as if remembering a path he had forgotten.

They passed the flower shop. They passed the park where children’s chalk drawings were fading in the dusk. They passed the little café where James always ordered the same sandwich because it was easier than choosing.

The shadow turned down a side street he didn’t recognize.

James hesitated.

Then he followed.

At the end of the block, there was a narrow set of steps leading up to a rooftop garden he had never noticed before. String lights hung between two walls. A few chairs sat empty. The city looked different from there: softer, less like a list of obligations.

James sat down.

The shadow sat beside him.

For the first time in months, James didn’t check his phone. He didn’t think about tomorrow’s schedule. He didn’t rehearse what he would say to anyone. He just watched the lights flicker and listened to the distant sound of traffic.

After a while, he said, “I guess you weren’t trying to leave.”

The shadow didn’t move.

James smiled, small and uncertain. “You were just tired of waiting for me to notice you.”

He stayed there until the air turned cold. When he finally walked home, the shadow followed close behind him, almost touching his heels.

At his front door, James paused.

He expected it to stop again.

It didn’t.

It came inside with him, quiet and steady, as if it had always belonged there.

[4
23,24,18
post-894","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-heal","tag-feeling","tag-heal","tag-story
["GET
