She knew every creak in the hallway carpet, every flickering bulb near the stairwell, and exactly which executives left the worst messes in their offices.

But tonight was different.

She pushed her cart past the glass-walled conference room and stopped.

Someone had left a laptop open on the long mahogany table.

That wasn’t unusual. People forgot things all the time. What was unusual was the screen.

It was showing a live video feed.

Rosa leaned closer, her rubber gloves squeaking against the cart handle. The camera angle was high—like it was mounted in the corner of a ceiling. The room in the video was dark, lit only by the blue glow of a monitor.

A man sat at a desk, typing.

Rosa frowned. She knew that room. It was the executive suite on the 34th floor. The man in the video was wearing a gray suit, his back to the camera.

She glanced at the ceiling. There was no camera there.

She looked back at the screen.

The man stopped typing. He reached for a coffee mug, took a sip, and set it down.

Rosa’s stomach tightened. She had just come from the 34th floor. She’d cleaned the executive suite an hour ago. The room had been empty. The lights were off. The blinds were drawn.

She reached for the laptop and closed it.

The screen went black.

She told herself it was nothing. Some kind of security feed. A prank. She wheeled her cart to the break room and started wiping down the counters, trying to shake the feeling that someone was watching her.

At 12:15 AM, her phone buzzed.

A text from her supervisor, Derek:

“Rosa, did you lock the 31st floor? Security says the stairwell door is propped open.”

She typed back: “No. I’ve been here all night.”

Three dots appeared. Then:

“Check the cameras. Make sure no one’s up there.”

Rosa didn’t want to. But she walked to the security station at the end of the hall—a small room with a bank of monitors showing every floor. She’d used it before when Derek needed her to check if someone left a window open.

She scrolled through the feeds. Lobby. Parking garage. Floor 28. Floor 29. Floor 30.

Floor 31.

The hallway camera showed her cart, parked outside the break room. Empty hallway. No one moving.

She clicked to Floor 32. Empty.

Floor 33. Empty.

Floor 34.

The executive suite.

The room was dark. The blinds were drawn, just like she’d left them.

But the monitor on the desk was on.

And someone was sitting in the chair.

Rosa stared at the screen. The figure didn’t move. It sat perfectly still, facing the desk, just like the man in the laptop video.

She zoomed in.

The chair was empty.

She blinked. The room was completely empty. The monitor was off.

She looked at the timestamp in the corner of the screen.

12:18 AM.

That was now.

She backed away from the monitors, her heart hammering against her ribs. She grabbed her phone and called Derek.

It rang four times. Then went to voicemail.

She tried again.

Voicemail.

She sent a text: “Someone is on the 34th floor. I can see them on the camera.”

The reply came instantly.

“Rosa, I’m at home. I haven’t been to the building in two days. Who’s there?”

She stared at the words. Then she looked back at the security screen.

Floor 34.

The figure was there again. Sitting in the chair. Still. Silent.

And this time, it turned its head.

Slowly.

Toward the camera.

Rosa couldn’t see a face. The angle was wrong. But she could see its hand, resting on the desk.

It was holding a phone.

Her phone buzzed.

A text from an unknown number.

“You shouldn’t have closed the laptop.”

Rosa dropped the phone. It hit the floor and cracked.

She didn’t pick it up.

She ran to the stairwell, her cart clattering behind her, and didn’t stop until she was in the parking garage, sitting in her car with the doors locked, watching the tower rise above her like a black pillar against the night sky.

On the 34th floor, a single light came on.

Then went off.

Rosa never went back to the Meridian Tower. She took a job cleaning a medical office across town—smaller, quieter, no cameras, no late-night texts.

But sometimes, when she’s alone in a room and the door is closed, she catches herself glancing at the ceiling.

Just to make sure nothing is watching.

And the strange thing is—she never feels entirely sure.

[14
25,18,22
post-909","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-suspense","tag-society","tag-story","tag-suspense
["GET
