Around him, coworkers laughed too loudly, clinked glasses, and told the same stories they’d told at every holiday party since he’d been hired.

He wasn’t against fun. He just had a habit of noticing the seams.

The marketing team had turned the annual company party into something almost festive. String lights ran across the ceiling. A banner read, “Another Great Year, Together!” in cheerful gold letters. Someone had taped a second banner underneath it that said, “Together Through the Storm,” which made the whole thing feel like a greeting card written by a lawyer.

James checked his watch. Nine-fifteen. If he left now, he could blame it on a headache. If he waited too long, he’d be trapped in a conversation with Greg from accounting, who always began sentences with, “Here’s the thing.”

Then the music dipped.

The CEO, Diane Marlow, stepped onto the small stage with the practiced brightness of someone who had done this many times. She tapped the microphone, smiled, and said, “Before we close out the night, we have one more surprise.”

A few people cheered. James took a sip of water.

“Every year,” Diane said, “we give away one grand prize. This year, it’s a fully paid two-week trip for two to Lisbon. Flights, hotel, meals, the works.”

The room went quiet in that specific way rooms go quiet when everyone is suddenly pretending not to want something very badly.

James almost looked away. He wasn’t a gambler, not even with raffle tickets. But his name had been entered automatically, like everyone else’s, and when the envelope was opened, he felt nothing except the dull relief that it probably wouldn’t be him.

Diane unfolded the paper.

“James Calloway.”

For a second, nobody moved.

Then Greg from accounting clapped him on the shoulder hard enough to make James spill a little water on his cuff.

“That’s you, buddy,” Greg said. “That’s you.”

People turned. Smiles arrived from every direction, bright and sudden, like headlights. Someone shouted, “No way!” Someone else laughed and said, “James? Really?”

James stood there holding his cup like it might explain what to do next.

He had won.

Two weeks in Lisbon. Sunlight on old stone streets. A hotel room with a view he had never paid for. A break from spreadsheets, performance reviews, and the low hum of fluorescent lights that seemed to follow him even at home.

So why did his stomach feel like he had just missed a train?

Diane handed him the envelope with a flourish. The photographer appeared from nowhere, crouched, and said, “Smile.”

James smiled.

The flash made everything white for half a second.

Afterward, people crowded around to congratulate him. His manager, Priya, squeezed his arm and said, “You deserve this.” A woman from HR beamed as if she had personally arranged the weather. Even Greg nodded like James had finally passed some invisible test.

James thanked them. He said the right words. He laughed when they laughed.

But the envelope in his hand felt heavier than paper should.

He thought about his mother’s kitchen table, where the calendar had once been covered in red circles for bills. He thought about his father, who had worked until his hands stopped working, and who had believed luck was something other people got so they’d have an excuse.

He thought about the last six months: the late nights, the quiet panic of layoffs, the way people stopped saying “we” and started saying “the company.”

And he thought about the trip.

Two weeks away.

Two weeks where his name would be on a list in a hotel lobby.

Two weeks where someone, somewhere, would take a photo of him smiling in front of a landmark and use it to make the year look brighter than it had been.

“Are you excited?” Priya asked.

James looked at her. She meant it kindly. That was the worst part.

“I don’t know,” he said.

She laughed, thinking he was being modest. “You should be. Lisbon is beautiful.”

“I know,” he said. “That’s not what I mean.”

But he didn’t explain.

Later, he found a quiet corner near the coat check and opened the envelope. Inside was a printed itinerary, a confirmation number, and a small card that read:
Congratulations from all of us. You’ve earned this moment.

James stared at the words.

Earned.

He had not entered a contest. He had not planned anything clever. He had not worked harder than anyone else that night. He had simply been the name pulled from a bowl while everyone else watched.

And yet the card made it sound like the universe had reviewed his file and decided he was ready for sunlight.

A waiter passed with a tray of empty glasses. James set the card down and picked one up, then set the card back down, then picked it up again.

He thought about calling his mother. He thought about telling her he had won a trip, and how she would say, “Well, that’s something,” in the careful voice she used when she didn’t want to sound too hopeful.

He thought about going home and packing nothing at all.

Instead, he walked back into the ballroom.

Diane was finishing her speech. The band was tuning up. Someone had turned the lights down low, and the gold banner above the stage caught the glow like a promise.

James looked at the envelope in his hand.

Then he looked at the room.

For the first time that night, he did not feel like a winner. He did not feel like a loser, either. He felt like a person standing in a place where everyone was pretending the same thing at once, and for once, he was pretending with them.

He slipped the card into his coat pocket.

Maybe he would go to Lisbon. Maybe he would sit by the water and eat something warm and forget the sound of his office printer. Maybe he would take a photo and send it to his mother without mentioning the banner, the raffle, or the company name.

Or maybe he would keep the trip for later, when he needed it more than he needed to prove he could enjoy it.

James folded the envelope carefully and put it beside his keys.

As he walked toward the door, the band began to play something soft and familiar. No one clapped. No one announced another prize. The night simply moved on, the way nights do, carrying everyone forward whether they were ready or not.

And James realized, with a small, unsettled calm, that the strange thing about winning was not the prize itself.

It was the moment after, when you had to decide what it meant.

[2
25,18,19
post-934","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-anecdote","tag-society","tag-story","tag-work
["GET
