His alarm had not gone off yet. His phone, face down on the nightstand, was silent.

But when he walked into the bathroom and glanced at the mirror, his reflection was already standing there.

Not moving. Not blinking. Just watching him.

Lucas stopped in the doorway.

The reflection wore the same gray T-shirt he had slept in. Its hair was tangled in the same way. Its feet were bare on the same cold tile. But its posture was different. It stood straighter, as if it had been waiting.

Lucas blinked.

The reflection blinked too, a half-second late.

“Okay,” he said.

His voice sounded thin in the small bathroom.

The reflection’s lips moved with his, but the timing was wrong. It was like watching a video of himself with the sound slightly out of sync.

He turned on the faucet and splashed water on his face. When he looked up again, the mirror showed only him—normal, ordinary, slightly sleepy.

He told himself it was nothing.

That afternoon, Lucas worked from home. He was a graphic designer, which meant most of his days were spent alone with a screen, a coffee mug, and the low hum of the refrigerator. His apartment was quiet in a way that sometimes felt comfortable and sometimes felt like the walls were listening.

At three-thirty, he went to the hallway mirror to fix his collar before a video call.

The reflection was already smiling.

Lucas was not.

He froze.

The smile in the mirror was small, polite, almost professional. It was the kind of smile he used with clients when a project was going badly and he had to pretend everything was fine.

Then the reflection’s mouth moved.

No sound came through the glass. But Lucas understood the words anyway.
You should answer the email.

Lucas stepped back.

His heart knocked against his ribs.

He looked down the hallway. Empty. The front door was still locked. The blinds were drawn. Nothing had changed except the mirror, and the man inside it.

He did not take the video call.

Instead, he opened his laptop and answered the email he had been avoiding for two days. It was a message from a client who had been unhappy with his latest design. Lucas had planned to reply tomorrow, or maybe the day after, or maybe never.

The reply was short. Polite. Honest.

He sent it.

When he looked up, the hallway mirror showed only his own confused face.

Over the next week, it happened again.

On Tuesday, the bathroom mirror showed Lucas brushing his teeth before he picked up the toothbrush.

On Thursday, the bedroom mirror showed him staring at his phone, his expression tired and disappointed. Lucas was not looking at his phone yet. But ten minutes later, he saw a text from his sister asking why he had not called her back.

He had meant to call. He had told himself he would.

On Saturday morning, the full-length mirror by the closet showed him sitting on the edge of the bed, hands folded, eyes red.

Lucas had not cried in months. Not since his father died. He had packed up the house, signed papers, thrown away old receipts and broken lamps and a coffee maker that no longer worked. He had done all the practical things.

He had not done the feeling part.

That morning, he sat down in front of the mirror.

The reflection sat with him.

For a long time, neither of them moved.

Then Lucas whispered, “I miss him.”

The reflection did not answer. It did not need to.

Lucas cried until his chest hurt, until the morning light moved across the floor and the apartment felt less like a place he was hiding in and more like a place he was living.

After that, the mirror stopped showing him the future.

Or maybe it never had.

Maybe it had only shown him the parts of himself he kept pretending were not there.

A month later, Lucas was getting ready for work. He shaved, combed his hair, and reached for his keys. The bathroom mirror showed exactly what he expected: a tired man in a blue shirt, ready for an ordinary Wednesday.

He paused.

The reflection paused too.

Same time. Same breath. Same small lines around the eyes.

Lucas almost smiled.

Then he noticed something.

The reflection’s hand was already reaching for the keys.

Not much. Just a fraction of a second.

Just enough to make him wonder whether the mirror had changed back to normal, or whether he had simply become the kind of person who no longer needed to be warned.

He picked up his keys.

The reflection did the same.

And for the first time in a long while, Lucas left the apartment feeling like he was already where he was going.

[4
23,24,18
post-940","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-heal","tag-feeling","tag-heal","tag-story
["GET
