His golden fur was a little worn, one of his button eyes was slightly loose, and his red bow tie had faded from many, many hugs. But Oliver didn’t mind. To him, Benny was perfect.

Every night, Oliver tucked Benny under his arm and whispered, “Goodnight, Benny.”

And every night, Benny would sit quietly on the pillow, smiling his soft, stitched smile.

One evening, after the stars had painted the sky silver, Oliver heard a tiny sound.
Squeak. Squeak. Squeak.

He sat up in bed. “Benny? Did you make that sound?”

Benny blinked — or at least, it looked like he blinked.

Then, in a small, warm voice, Benny said, “Hello, Oliver.”

Oliver’s eyes grew wide. “You can talk?”

Benny nodded. “Only at night. Only when the moon is awake and the house is quiet.”

Oliver gasped with delight. “Why didn’t you tell me before?”

Benny wiggled his little paw. “Because tonight is special. Tonight, I want to show you something.”

Oliver climbed out of bed, wrapped his pajamas tight around him, and followed Benny across the moonlit floor.

To Oliver’s surprise, all the toys in the room had come alive.

The red race car was racing in slow circles around a slipper. The wooden tower was being rebuilt by a brave green soldier. The blue drum was humming a gentle lullaby, and a little yellow duck waddled past, quacking softly.

“This is our playtime,” Benny explained. “But we don’t play with each other. We play with the things we love most.”

Oliver watched as the race car carefully pushed a tiny blue blanket across the floor.

“What’s that for?” he asked.

“That,” said Benny, “is for Teddy.”

“Who is Teddy?”

Benny pointed to the far corner of the room, where a very old, very small teddy bear sat alone. His fur was gray, his ears were crooked, and one of his paws had been mended with a careful stitch.

Oliver had almost forgotten about Teddy. He had been his very first toy, the one he hugged when he was too little to walk.

“Teddy doesn’t play anymore,” Benny said softly. “He thinks he is too old.”

Oliver’s heart felt warm and a little sad. He walked over to Teddy and knelt beside him.

“Hello, Teddy,” he whispered.

The little bear looked up slowly. “Hello, Oliver.”

“I missed you,” Oliver said.

Teddy’s stitched smile seemed to shine. “I missed you too.”

Then Oliver had an idea.

He picked up Teddy gently and carried him to the center of the room. “Everyone,” he announced, “tonight, Teddy is our guest of honor!”

The toys cheered in their own quiet ways. The drum gave a soft beat. The duck quacked happily. The race car spun in a joyful circle.

Benny climbed onto a cushion and said, “Let’s play the best game of all.”

“What game is that?” asked the green soldier.

“The game of love,” said Benny.

And so, under the silver moonlight, the toys played together. The race car gave Teddy a ride. The duck shared a pretend picnic. The drum played a sweet song, and Oliver held Teddy close.

When the sky began to turn pale blue, the toys slowly grew still again.

Benny climbed back onto Oliver’s pillow and whispered, “Thank you, Oliver.”

“For what?”

“For remembering that every toy is special — not because it is new, but because it is loved.”

Oliver smiled sleepily and hugged Benny tight.

“I will always love you, Benny.
