Not yet.

The first tree was named Oliver. He had round leaves and loved to hum in the wind.

The second tree was named Lily. She had soft branches and loved to watch the clouds.

The third tree was named Pip. He was the smallest, with one crooked leaf that always waved hello.

One sunny morning, Oliver said, “When I grow up, I want to be the tallest tree in the whole forest.”

Lily smiled and said, “When I grow up, I want to give the best shade for tired travelers.”

Pip wiggled his crooked leaf and said, “I just want to have friends.”

A little bird landed on Oliver’s branch. “Tweet! That sounds lovely,” she said.

Then she flew to Lily. “Tweet tweet! Very kind.”

Then she hopped to Pip. “And you, little tree, what will you do?”

Pip thought for a long time. “I don’t know yet,” he said. “But I hope it makes someone smile.”

The days went by.

The sun warmed their leaves.

The rain gave them cool drinks.

The wind told them bedtime stories.

Oliver grew taller and taller. His branches reached toward the sky like long green arms.

Lily grew wider and wider. Her leaves became soft and full, like a cozy green umbrella.

But Pip… Pip grew slowly.

Sometimes he felt sad.

“I am still so small,” he whispered.

Oliver rustled gently. “Don’t worry, Pip. Everyone grows in their own time.”

Lily bent a branch toward him. “And being small can be very useful too.”

Pip tried to believe them.

One afternoon, a little squirrel named Nutmeg came running up the hill.

“Oh no, oh no!” she cried. “My acorn is stuck in the tall grass, and I cannot find it!”

Oliver stretched his branches high. “I can see far, but I cannot reach the grass.”

Lily spread her shade. “I can keep you cool, but I cannot search the grass.”

Then Pip had an idea.

“Wait!” he said. “I am small. Maybe that is just right.”

Pip bent down low, and his crooked leaf pointed toward a tiny gap in the grass.

“There!” he said.

Nutmeg the squirrel peeked inside and found her acorn.

“Thank you, Pip!” she cheered. “You are the perfect size!”

Pip’s leaves trembled with joy.

That evening, a family of rabbits came to rest under the hill.

The father rabbit was tired.

The mother rabbit was warm.

The baby rabbits were looking for a place to play.

Oliver said, “Climb near me, and you can see the stars.”

Lily said, “Sit under me, and you can rest in the cool shade.”

Pip said, “And if you want, my little branches can be a hiding place for games.”

The baby rabbits giggled.

They played hide-and-seek behind Pip.

They napped under Lily.

They watched the stars with Oliver.

The hill felt full of laughter.

Years passed.

Oliver became tall and strong, just as he had dreamed.

Lily became wide and gentle, giving shade to many weary travelers.

And Pip?

Pip did not become the tallest tree.

But he became the friendliest tree on the hill.

Birds built nests near him.

Squirrels left acorns beside him.

Children tied little ribbons to his branches and said, “This is our favorite tree.”

One night, when the moon was bright and the stars were sleepy, Oliver whispered, “Pip, do you remember what you wanted when we were little?”

Pip smiled.

“Yes,” he said. “I wanted friends.”

Lily’s leaves shimmered in the moonlight.

“And look,” she said softly. “You have the whole hill.”

The wind hummed a quiet song.

The stars blinked above.

Oliver, Lily, and Pip stood together, side by side, just as they always had.

One tall, one wide, and one small.

But all of them full of love.

And on that little green hill, every tree knew a secret:

The best thing about growing is not becoming the biggest.

It is becoming a place where others feel safe, happy, and loved.

Goodnight, little one.
May your dreams be as gentle as leaves in the moonlight.

The Story of Three
