Deep in the forest, there stood a very tall, very old oak tree. Its leaves looked like little green fans, and when the wind blew, they whispered softly.

Every night, the animals in the forest would grow quiet, because that was when a nightingale named Melody began to sing.

Melody’s voice was as gentle as moonlight and as clear as a little stream. When Little Rabbit heard her song, he would curl up his ears. When Little Squirrel heard it, he would hug his tail and yawn. Even the noisiest little frog would close his eyes and sit still on his lily pad.

But one evening, Melody suddenly didn’t feel like singing.

She sat on a branch and sighed, “Oh dear, I sing the same song every night. I wonder if everyone is getting tired of it.”

Just then, a black-and-white magpie flew over. His name was Pip, and he was the liveliest bird in the forest. Pip had a long tail, bright eyes, and he loved discovering new things everywhere he went.

“Melody! Melody!” Pip landed beside her. “Why aren’t you singing? Tonight’s moon is round and big, just like a giant piece of cheese!”

Melody looked down. “Pip, I think my song is too ordinary. Maybe nobody likes it anymore.”

Pip tilted his head. “But I love your song! Every time I hear it, my heart feels warm and cozy, like I’ve just had a cup of hot honey milk.”

Melody smiled. “Really?”

“Of course!” Pip flapped his wings. “But if you’d like, I can sing with you. I can tell jokes, and I can keep the beat!”

Melody was curious. “You can keep the beat?”

“Watch this!” Pip puffed out his chest. “My beak goestap-tap-tap, my wings goflap-flap-flap, and my tail goesswish-swish-swish!”

And sure enough, he started making a rhythm with his beak, wings, and tail.
Tap-tap-tap, flap-flap-flap, swish-swish-swish—

Melody couldn’t help but laugh. Her laughter sounded like a string of tiny bells, gently ringing in the quiet forest.

“Alright then,” Melody said. “Let’s sing a special song together.”

So Melody began to sing her gentle song, and Pip kept a light, cheerful beat beside her.

Melody sang:

“The moon is sleeping in the clouds,
The stars are blinking in the sky.
The wind walks softly through the trees,
And tucks each little leaf in tight.”

Pip chimed in:

“Tap-tap-tap, don’t be scared,
Flap-flap-flap, dreams are here.
Swish-swish-swish, close your eyes,
Tomorrow’s sun will say hello.”

The animals in the forest peeked out from their homes.

Little Rabbit said, “This song is so gentle.”

Little Squirrel said, “And it has a beat! It’s like a cradle rocking.”

Little Frog whispered, “I think I’m already getting sleepy…”

Melody and Pip grew happier and happier. Melody’s voice was like soft feathers, and Pip’s beat was like warm little hands, making the night feel both peaceful and fun.

As they sang, the wind slowed down. The old oak tree’s leaves stopped whispering and nodded gently, as if to say, “Beautiful, beautiful.”

The moon quietly peeked out from behind a cloud, casting silver light over Melody and Pip.

Pip whispered, “Melody, you know what? Your song is not ordinary at all. It makes the animals who are afraid of the dark feel safe. It helps children who can’t sleep close their eyes. It makes the whole forest have sweet dreams.”

Melody looked at him, and her heart felt warm.

“Thank you, Pip.”

“Thank you for singing with me,” Pip said, letting out a big yawn. “But… I think I’m getting a little sleepy now.”

Melody smiled softly. “Then sleep, Pip. Tonight’s song is for you too.”

She sang an even softer, gentler song, like a ray of moonlight landing on Pip’s feathers.

Pip tucked his head under his wing and mumbled, “So lovely… tomorrow, let’s sing together again…”

And then he was fast asleep.

Melody stood on the old oak tree and looked at the quiet forest. Little Rabbit was asleep. Little Squirrel was asleep. Little Frog was asleep too. Even Pip, who loved telling jokes, was having a sweet dream.

Melody gently sang the last line:

“Good night, moon.
Good night, stars.
Good night, every little dream.”

The forest was very still. Only the gentle wind walked quietly through the leaves.

And Melody knew that tomorrow night, she and Pip would sing a brand-new song for the forest together.
