At four o’clock in the afternoon, the air in the office building is always sticky. Lynn stared at the densely packed tables on the screen, feeling her neck like rusty gears. This is her third year working at this multinational public relations company, where she spins like a precisely set screw through endless emails and meetings every day.

She got up and went to the pantry, wanting to refill her cup of coffee. Pushing open the door, I happened to bump into Sarah, the department director who had just finished a cross-border video conference. Sarah was tidying up her disheveled temples in front of the mirror, and her eyes couldn’t hide her exhaustion.

Do you need any help? “Lynn asked softly.

Sarah was taken aback for a moment, then shook her head with a bitter smile and said, “I just feel like this tie is making me a bit breathless

Lynn didn’t politely step out as usual. Instead, she took out a mint candy from her pocket that she had planned to keep for herself and gently placed it on the table. “My grandmother said that mint can evoke the taste of the sea breeze,” she said

Sarah looked at the candy, her eyes flickering slightly. She peeled off the candy wrappers, put them in her mouth, and let out a long sigh of relief, as if a salty sea breeze had really passed through the thick glass curtain wall.

Thank you, Lynn, “Sarah whispered, regaining the director’s shrewdness, but with an imperceptible softness at the corner of her mouth.

Lynn returned to her workstation and continued to handle the never-ending emails. No one noticed the brief intersection in the pantry, nor did anyone know the weight of a mint candy.

In this massive urban machine, everyone is running desperately, afraid of being thrown off the track. We are used to measuring value with KPIs and defining success with salary, but we often forget that what truly catches the falling soul is not the grand narrative of promotion and salary increase, but these tiny moments like dust.

At the end of work, Lynn walked out of the building with a cool evening breeze. She remembered the moment of relief when Sarah held onto the candy, and suddenly felt that today’s exhaustion was not so unbearable.

Life may be like this, spending most of the time digesting alone in unnoticed corners. But there are always some small kindness, like a light shining in the dark night, although it cannot illuminate the entire road, it is warm enough for a journey.

Lynn wrapped herself tightly in a windbreaker and walked towards the subway station. She knows that when the sun rises tomorrow, everything will be the same again. But at least tonight, she can sleep well with a hint of mint tenderness.

This small matter that no one cared about was folded into the folds of the city, becoming the most secretive and resilient support between two adults.
