On a quiet, cobblestone street stood a charming little house with blue shutters. Inside lived three kittens named Oliver, Bella, and Barney.

Oliver was a black-and-white kitten who looked as if he were wearing an elegant little tuxedo; he had a calm temperament and was very clean. Bella was a pure white kitten who looked like a soft cloud; she was gentle and full of curiosity. Barney was an orange kitten who looked like a warm little sun; he was lively and energetic, always brimming with wild ideas.

One sunny afternoon, the three kittens were basking in the sun on the windowsill. Barney suddenly jumped up, his tail held high: “I can smell it! It’s the scent of honey and freshly baked bread! The bakery on the corner must have just taken a batch out of the oven!”

Bella blinked her deep blue eyes and whispered, “But Mom said we’re not allowed to go out on our own.”

Oliver licked his paw and said slowly, “But we can ‘go’ to the bakery in our own way.”

The three kittens huddled together and came up with a brilliant idea. They found an old cardboard box. Barney was in charge of drawing the bakery’s sign on the box with his paws, Bella made a little flag out of her soft white fur, and Oliver curled a small twig around his tail to use as an “oar.” They pushed the cardboard box to the windowsill and pretended it was a “dream boat” sailing toward the bakery.

“Are you ready?” Barney shouted excitedly.

“Ready!” Bella and Oliver answered in unison.

The three kittens jumped into the cardboard box together, pretending to row with their “oars” while making “splash, splash” sounds with their mouths. They “sailed” across the ocean of the living room carpet, “navigated around” the sofa reef, and even “dodged” the little island of Mom’s slippers lying on the floor. Bella closed her eyes and whispered, “ “I can smell the sweetness of honey and the aroma of freshly baked bread.” Oliver gently tapped the side of the cardboard box with his paw, imitating the sound of waves: “Splash—splash—” Barney kept talking about all the different kinds of bread at the bakery, from soft croissants to sweet jam-filled buns, making all three kittens swallow hard.

Just as they were happily “sailing” along, Mom walked over quietly, holding a small plate. On the plate were three freshly baked cookies, each drizzled with a little honey.

“It looks like your ‘dream boat’ has successfully arrived at the bakery,” Mom said with a gentle smile.

The three kittens jumped up in delight and gathered around their mom. They cradled the cookies in their little paws and ate them bite by bite, the sweetness of the honey melting in their mouths, warm as sunshine.

“Mom, can our ‘dream boats’ really smell the aroma?” Bella asked, tilting her head back.

Mom stroked Bella’s head and whispered, “It’s because your hearts are filled with anticipation for beautiful things. Just like Oliver’s calmness, Bella’s gentleness, and Barney’s liveliness—these are all the most precious ‘scents’ in your hearts.”

Oliver rubbed against Mom’s hand, Bella snuggled up against her lap, and Barney rested his little head on the top of her foot. The three kittens snuggled together, their bellies full of sweet cookies and their hearts filled with warm love.

The sunlight outside the window gradually softened, like a golden veil draped over the little street. The three kittens yawned softly, their eyes slowly growing heavy. They knew that tonight’s dreams would surely be filled with the scent of honey and toasted bread, and the warm moments spent with their mom.

Mom softly hummed a gentle lullaby, her voice floating through the air like feathers. The three kittens’ breathing gradually evened out, their little paws still pressed tightly together, like three little stars clinging close to one another.

Good night, Oliver. Good night, Bella. Good night, Barney.

Good night, all you little ones with hearts full of wonderful hopes.
