The setting sun looked like a melting honey candy, bathing the forest in a warm orange-red glow. Oliver the little fox, carrying his favorite little blue backpack, skipped and hopped his way to the old oak tree. His backpack was filled with blueberry muffins his mom had baked, as well as a little lantern that gave off a soft yellow light.
“Oliver! You’re here so early!” a crisp voice called from the treetops. It was Bella the squirrel, hanging upside down from a branch, her fluffy tail spread out like a parachute. She was cradling a bag of shiny nuts—the plumpest ones she’d specially picked out from her pantry.
“Bella, your nuts look like stars!” Oliver tilted his head back, his eyes sparkling.
“That’s because they’re for the best camping buddy ever,” Bella said, hopping down lightly and landing right beside Oliver.
Before long, a “thump, thump, thump” came from behind the bushes. It was Buddy the little hedgehog, with a few fresh mint leaves and a small bunch of wild daisies tucked into the quills on his back. “I brought mint tea and flower wreaths,” Buddy said slowly, his voice as gentle as the wind rustling through the grass. “When we have tea tonight, we can weave the daisies into our hair.”
The three friends held hands and walked along the path strewn with fallen leaves toward a clearing deep in the forest. The evening breeze blew gently, and the leaves rustled as if singing a welcome song for them.
When they reached the campsite, Oliver spread out a soft blanket of moss, Bella arranged the nuts neatly in a small circle, and Buddy built a tiny fire pit out of twigs. Although there was no real fire, Oliver lit a small lantern, and a warm glow immediately enveloped them, as if draping the clearing in a layer of golden gauze.
“Now, it’s story time!” Bella held up a nut as if it were a little microphone. “Who’s going first?”
“I’ll go first,” Oliver cleared his throat. “Once upon a time, there was a little fox who was always worried that his tail wasn’t fluffy enough. Until one day, he met a little squirrel, who said, ‘ ‘Your tail is as warm as the setting sun—it’s the prettiest blanket in the forest.’”
Bella giggled and pressed a nut into Oliver’s hand: “So now, your tail is the best pillow ever!”
Buddy hummed softly as he poured mint tea into three little acorn cups. The scent of the tea mingled with the fresh air of the forest, wafting into everyone’s noses. They leaned against Oliver’s tail; Bella shared the nuts among them, and Buddy placed daisy wreaths on each of their heads. The light from the little lanterns swayed gently with their laughter, like a tender heart beating.
As the night deepened, the forest grew quiet, with only the chirping of insects sounding softly like a lullaby. Oliver’s tail became the softest pillow; Bella curled up beside him, Buddy leaned against his back, and the three little friends huddled together under the warm blanket, like three little stars nestled close together.
“Good night, Oliver,” Bella whispered, her eyes already half-closed.
“Good night, Bella. Good night, Buddy.” ” Oliver replied softly. The light from the little lantern gradually dimmed, yet it left warmth in their hearts.
The forest cradled them, just as a mother cradles her sleeping child. Amid the sweet scent of blueberry muffins, the refreshing aroma of mint tea, and the sound of their friends’ breathing, the three little friends slowly drifted off to sleep. In their dreams, their tails turned into clouds, nuts turned into stars, and the forest remained their warmest home forever.
